Tommys Version of Somewhere New

ROTD: Tommy
SOTD: Peter

The calls to the Enduro GODs for rain were finally answered and it bucketed down. There was an eager wait for some-one to call a ride and it was not until late Friday Tommy put his hand up! Good onya Tommy. Peter, Steve & Roley said we are in but surprisingly there was silence on the message board from others, a part from a bit of chatter about the need to plan a Crusty Quinns 10th Anniversary (which is a must do!).

As Peter, Steve and I pulled up at the Lakes Roadhouse we were met by Tommy, Lindsay and Spencer who brought along a mate, Thomas (or is that Thomaz with an accent hes from Austria! and would you believe rides a Husaberg!). Bringing up the rear was Carlo.

Peter had the bright idea to get dressed under the shelter next to the servo before we head off to the secret spot, given the rain was really coming down! Great idea except Lindsay drives his 4FWD and trailer under the shelter so the rest of us stand half in the rain entertaining the rest of the Roadhouse users with our manly physiques, while getting changed. Lindsay that gets you Tool of the Week! LOL

At the Riders Briefing we are reminded of the dangers of dirt biking and in particular Carlo was reminded of reading the trail a head and not taking out the Lead Rider! LOL Tommy outlined the basis of the ride we will see where the trails take us and occasionally we may refer to the GPS! For something different Peter put his hand up to Sweep! We then mounted up knowing there would be no dust and the anticipated prospect that Carlo would probably come to grief in a large pool of water somewhere!

The trials were mint with occasional showers of rain, running water, grippy, sticky tracks and NO DUST! We followed some of Pounces tracks from last week but also found new ones. At every re-group there were smiles all round with comments like this does not get any better, beats shopping with the missus and of course the old favourite - mowing the lawns! Oh of course the rest of the Crusties dont know what they are missing or do they? There wasnt any secret rides was there???? LOL

After just over 60 kms we got back to the cars for a refill. Spencer and Thomas call it a day Spencer made some comment about he would be pushing his luck with the missus to be out all day given he would see us at the Honda Adventure Rally next week!

We re-fuelled with Carlo bumming fuel of all of us thats a carton of Crownies Carlo!

Not too far into the second loop I thought Carlo was going to make my day. Typically he gunned it through a deep, black puddle of water coming out onto some shiney, black soil and immediately fish-tailed from left to right and back again, with the back wheel trying to catch up with the front wheel. How the hell you did not come off is beyond me you are either very talented or a very lucky SOB!

After that a few of us had tumbles! We had just given Lindsay some advice on approaching shiney, slippery logs at right angles when what did I do but loose the front wheel in front of the pack on a log! No damage but to my pride. A short time later Tommy took a little tumble too, loosing the front wheel on some slippery moss rock. BIKE - broke a handle-bar clamp for one of his Barkbusters, but nothing a plastic tie could not fix, TOMMY just dented his Irish pride. Finally, Peter took a tumble on an up hill track that had a bit of a step-up that caught him out. Some how he gave his left ankle a bit of twist and it was decided we would head back to the cars.

All in all a great day was had by all. Tommy lead a great ride. Steve has lifted his riding skills up a level or two, standing up on the pegs more and pushing to the front of the pack more it must have been the advice H gave him last week! Lindsay rode consistently all day and managed to navigation the muddy section this time without any dramas! Carlo well what can you say? He is entertaining and one of the few not to have a stack!

When its comes to ROTD while there was some worthy riders it must go to Tommy he stood up when it counts calling the ride and lead the best ride I have been on this year! There was also some worthy nomination for SOTD however it must go to Peter (to keep his stats up!) given he was the only one requiring Nurse Tommys warm hands at the end of the ride. Little Bro you better right for the West Coast Safari ride in two weeks!
