SOUTHBOUND TOUR 17/18 July

Players: Jacko, Bruce, Husky Mike, GasgasLex, DirtBikeChick Susan, Aaron & DavidS

The weather forecast for the weekend wasnt all that flash but as Saturday dawned it didnt look too bad.
We met up on the outside of town and drove off to Bremer whilst Jacko, Husky Mike, and Bruce & his wife had arrived there on the Friday.
Driving into the Bremer pub we saw that Bruce was all ready with his Husaberg , around the corner was Jacko & Mike also ready to get going.

Half an hour later we were ready & set off following Bruce with his GPS which led us up Telegraph hill & a dead end.never mind a photo later and we were off in cool clear conditions & no sign of the rains that were forecast with the Honda out leading.
Down the hill we went entering a narrow rocky trail leading to the Fitzgerald Nat park & Dillon bay.
It wasnt all easy going for the two 250cc bikes as some areas were soft boggy sands but eventually we all made it to the big dunes closest to Bremer Bay.
Just a short blatt was had there as we still had a hundred kms of trails to ride so we back tracked onto Dillon Bay beach and into some very soft boggy sand on the Eastern end. GasgasLex thought about turning back but when the 250s roared past he decided to suck it up & follow along.
The beach gave way to some soft coastal tracks and eventually back below limestone outcrops.
Pretty soon we came across our first fishermen & the amazing sight of a large Maori mother riding a large quad bike hell for leather along the coastal dunes with her two kids sitting on top of the front fenders, legs dangling centimeters in front of the wheels with only shorts & tee shirts for protection.complete madness..but anyway here we stopped to say g-day to some fishers from Albany who Lex knewTurning inland we hit the rockier inland trails that Pounce & crew experienced last year, the few water logged sections were fortunately not as deep as last year however Husky Mike managed to stall in Pounces pond twice but not terminally.
The trail into Reef bch was a fast meandering track with a few limestone outcrops waiting to trip you up but everyone got there safely and regrouped down on the beach before hitting the first big dune . First Lex stalled on the lip of the dune then Bruce followed suit just behind. Jacko watched & learned then applied this knowledge in getting his DRZ up & over the dunes lip.
Lex thought it might be a good idea to jump back on the Honda but managed to fall over the bike and roll half way down the hill . Next came Susan up the dune and her TTRs 250ccs gave it their all but got stuck half way up & rider & mount fell down the hill. A bit of heaving and a regroup later we made our way from one large dune to the next bigger dune until there were no higher ones & our GPS told us our height ASL from the beach below was 215 meters..
Aaron decided that having a puncture was a good idea and luckily Jacko the champ that he is had a spare tube and the knowledge to fit the new tube during an inconvenient rain storm.
With the rains abated we headed off to the fishermans shack on the far western edge of Reef bch passing a few 4x4s with keen fishermen braving the freezing water, another regroup and it was a follow the leader back thru the limestone outcrops & sand dune mountains back towards Bremer.
We had lost so much time with the flat tyres that by the time we arrived at Bruces secret fuel dump near the road it was almost dark and freezing & too late to visit the Ravines.

A hot shower and we were ready for a feast at the pub, our table had 11 people on it with the wives & friends keeping us company.
The next day was another sweet sun filled day, what started as a little ride out East eventually became another 100 kms ride to Point Ann. The snaking hard trails with the mini berms which KLXPete loved last year were perfect again and everyone enjoyed the ride out to Trigelow beach.
There was about 19 kms of hard packed smooth white sandy beach with whales playing in pods of 2 or 3 every few hundred meters along the way to distract us into taking photos but eventually at the end of Trigelow bch we found the 4x4 rubber mat track up the beach to Point Ann.

Here the platforms gave everyone a good viewing position of the whales belowand a good place to have lunch.
Back down the hill & more whales until we didnt bother to look anymore, just fang back towards Bremer.
We got back to Bremer at lunch time with about 220kms of fun riding over the weekend & no major misshaps just the usual soft sand offs and 2 failed tyre tubes on the same bike.

Thankfully no SOTD but ROTD goes to Jacko for his eager willingness to help with his tyre tubes replacement prowess.
See you next time
