ANZAC Day ride started off with 15 riders Mick450 and WrRoss showed up on their big bikes for a chat on there way out for a recon ride .
So off we go with 13 riders into the pea gravel and dust with Jacko leading and CRFAndrew sweeping this should be an interesting day. Before long we are at the gullies the first test for the day some handle it better than others or maybe they just get lucky. We have a regroup after this and have to wait for a short time as new guy Pat71 on a Kawasaki 400 (a green DRZ) had some issues but he made it through next time he may be one of the lucky ones. All good so Jacko sets off again thinking he is on the right tracks for a few Ks but he is not so another regroup and Husq Mike and Jacko are trying to sort what is going on when they realize that the GPS has frozen and we need to back track a bit. This has the added benefit for us as we find some new tracks that take us to the an area we are familiar with. Along the way I see Troy450 off the track with his bike facing the wrong way bark busters off one side so we set about fixing them but Troy is only worried about his new helmet not the bike.
Now its into the big hills this is always good for a laugh as long as you are not the one having a bad day getting to the top see photos. After this we have another regroup and head count and its noticed that Pat is missing so Andrew is off to find him and is back in on time, he ran wide into the bush and on a green bike no one spotted him but this is why we have corner men and regroups often in thick bush and tricky sections.
I swap sweep duties with Andrew so that he can have a blast in the pack all is going well until I see Skullman at the side of the track with a flat back tyre so we set about getting the wheel off and fixing it this all goes well apart from some very large and angry ants trying to have a lunch on my hand. Rothy is a victim of racing in the pack as a rock the size of a golf ball is roosted up and smashes his headlight.
A bit more backtracking and riding around looking for a track home and we come across 3 riders on 2 bikes that are even more lost than us or as H Mike said “sometimes temporarily disorientated but never lost” one bike has run out of fuel and is stashed in the bush and the others are running low so they join us and head back to the our cars for a top up of fuel and direction to their cars that are not too far away.
A few beers come out and we all agree that its been a great day on the bikes with plenty of thrills and a few spills but nothing to bad.
Thanks to the diggers for their sacrifices over the years we will always remember them on ANZAC Day cheers to you all.
Tommy
