Ride Called by XR Cass for Saturday August 31st. Last minute oil change for XR Adam first thing in the morning for the 650 and we were ready to head out. We were only slowed down by some negotiation around accessing some of Cass’s other spare parts for Adams bike. The sticker covering the crack in the fuel tank may not be a long term fix! KTM Hunter, XR Cass, and XR Adam headed north of Quinns at 8:30. A 30 minute warm up in sand heading north coupled with a couple hill climbs got the blood pumping. XR Adam found the only slick clay we would see all day up close and personal but his timing was good as the heavens opened up a couple of minutes later to wash him off.
We took in some new single trail tracks of tight twisty stuff through the trees linked with the regular ridge lines as we tried to expand a northern loop. Stop at the servo for snack and splash of fuel before bush bashing to open up some more overgrown ridgeline. Cass got a workout on his 650 as it wasn’t enjoying the slow progress through the bush. It is obviously more used to a little more throttle. Adam loved his new gearing with better hill climbing ability and much more top end. We were just about to head home when a quick blast down by the water was suggested. Seemed like a good idea at the time until we were dodging the tide coming in and running out of beach on several occasions. I managed to stay upright despite getting hit by an incoming wave but fell victim shortly thereafter going over a ledge and doing a quite a spectacular endo cart wheeling both bike and rider. No injuries just a few minor broken bits on the KTM. Lucky it wasn’t a Honda. As luck would have it both the 650s parked 20 meters away got to watch the whole thing unfold but didn’t get the cameras out quick enough to catch me on the ground with surf washing at the bikes wheels. SOTD was quickly announced and we were back home followed by more negotiating for XR650 parts over a couple of whiskeys. Great morning out doing over 60kms and thanks to Cass for calling the ride and leading most of the day.
