The call went out for a 3 day Adventure ride into the mighty Murchison and 10 riders threw up their hands to come along. There were plenty of different bikes which included the DR650’s (3), BMW 650 (1), KTM690’s (2) , Tenere (2), KTM 1190 (1) and of course the never say die DRZ400 (1) of Jacko’s. There were as many levels of rider along for the ride as well.

Day 1 kicked off with breakfast at the Bindoon Bakery as the meeting place. 9 riders met up there with Nick not making the allotted time and chasing us down catching up just before the dirt. After a feed and coffee we hit the bitumen and rode to Moora. Not too bad a ride with plenty of scenery and windy bits. At Moora we jumped onto the dirt following the rail access road for the next 5 hours with a lunch break all the way through to Mingenew. There were plenty of thrills and spills along the way with the conditions and track surface changing every few minutes.

There was a bit of just about everything including, sand, mud, gravel, rock and really just about anything else you could come across. Johan on one of the Tenere’s flipped it on a rail crossing and Lee put the big 1190 down hard on a mud hole. There were a number of other offs too many to list but sufficient to say we were all challenged at some point. We even road across a rail bridge without guards as the salt pan it crossed was just too wet to chance it . Ask Jacko – He gave it a go.

Friday was warm with temperatures in excess of 35 on the trail. I manage to empty my 3 litre camel pack over the course of the day. With plenty of stops, regroups and helmets off we managed to all survive and get the dirt out of the way. After a cold beer at the local pub and some shopping at the local IGA in Mingenew we headed towards Ellen Dale Pool to camp the night. The cold beer ran freely and so did the bench racing. The facilities are great there with BBQ’s, tables and chairs and loos and we settled in for the night after a few dirty and hot bodies cooled off in the river.

We turned to plan B for day 2 as the intended route was not possible with high river crossings due to recent rains in the region. Mike L Led us in the back way to Gero so we could ride a bit more dirt. A couple of us stopped at the bike shop so Lee could buy a part to fix his broken 1190. After a fuel top up and some morning tea at the 440 road house we headed to MOR. Straight up the bitumen with a stop at the Galena Bridge so Colin could abuse a retired couple driving a camper van and obviously in a real hurry. Bloody grey nomads. The rode into MOR was a little more boggy than it normally is causing a few heart stopping moments for some and for others the challenge to see just how fast they could ride.

We set up camp at the donga’s and said hello to Merv, Wombat and Bushy (Gero Crusty Quinns) and their kids and took an hour to have lunch and a rest. Back on with the gear and out to do a bit of exploring. Riding was difficult with lots of water around and many of the marked tracks along the river impassable. We tried some stuff out further but finally gave up when Mike proposed we go for a swim in the dirty brown water of the Murchison which was flowing at around 5 knots. A few of the guys even swam back and forth which was a big effort. Well done boys.

Bev and Mal came to the rescue later in the day when the beer finally turned up and then dinner was cooked. There were around 15 of us there for dinner and the night went off well with plenty of cold ones sank. Lee tried his hand at a burger which is called a blown diff – see pic. Although he did not get all the way through it he was not far off and did a mighty job.

Sunday morning started off a quiet affair with breakfast, a few laughs and we were ready to hit the road and head home. Morning tea at North Hampton, lunch at Jurien and things were looking good until around Lano when we caught some Harleys and a sports bike and Mike L decided it was time to take them on riding dirty old trail bikes. The next 80 kms was fast and furious but we all got home safe satisfied with a good ride (until next time anyway)
