A great roll up for the 2016 Bremer Bay sand follies.
After a week of showers the sand wasnt too dusty and all was looking great for a ride. We had about 24 starters in the Saturday "Enduro" ride with about another 7 or so Adventure bikes heading off on a softer alternate route.
We met up at the local fuel station where DRZ Dennis and Fred the lead rider gave us the usual prep pep talk and then we were off on a ride that took in about 130 kms of the fine south west coast.
There was a secret tote going around on which brand of bike would be the first to break down but as everyone said it would be a KTM and everyone was proved right no one took the money.
A bolt securing the front sprocket onto a Kato had removed itself and it took a while to find some bubble gum to fix the sprocket in place but when it was done we all headed off. As far as Ive heard this was the only problem that anyone had apart from Georgias 1990 DT200 not starting on Sunday.
Almost everyone had minor moments in the churned up tracks where they departed company with their bikes briefly so awarding Stack of the Day could go to almost anyone.. Perhaps Tommy ought to take it for his mysterious bloody schnozz that happened out of sight of most people and most probably happened when he tried to leap over a razor back dune ridge only to discover it dropped away on the other side. Maybe the bloke who magically parked his bike upside down on its handlebars could take the award or Shannon the token Honda rider doing a speedy stand up wheelie that ended badly should grab that honour but that would be unfair to all the stackee’s (stackers?) suffice to say that its a shared award.
Young Fred the Jerramungup Husaberg rider led the ride and for a bloke in his 60s put many a young buck in their place. Our first obstacle was the leading edge of an advancing dune swallowing up the landscape , Fred skipped up there but with a few more bikes the path became churned and soft. Some made it look easy and other kept plugging away over and over... The secret was to be committed and give it the herbs up the hill for he who hesitated was mocked.... and filmed by those waiting at the top.
Eventually we all made it up the bank and went on a tour of the dunes for awhile then Fred led us to a beach that could only be exited via a narrow winding rutted, washed out limestone mountain goat trail. It had that fine black dirt that clings to your lungs and offers no traction, the guys all bunched up like Lemmings on a ledge but one by one everyone managed to climb the infernal hill and marvel at the beauty of the coastline. Sometime later we arrived at a fuel dump, filled up and did some more riding until some guys took the easy way home while some of us took the slightly harder way home and still others followed the leader back via an even more onerous track arriving back at camp about 3pm and hitting the showers before the big dinner at the Bremer Resort.
Sunday came and a few sore heads and sore bodies had had enough but some of us rode off in two groups (the hard core 0800am riders ) and the less hard 0900 gentile riders for another blatt in different directions. All up there were about 29 “enduro” riders and another 7 “Adventure bike” riders plus a few wives and kids attending which brought a lot of dollars into the local economy. As for names I can only remember (in no particular order) Pounce, Tommy, Dennis, Rik, Gasgaslex,WaynoVB, Mick530, Twoody, Dazza, Shannon, Georgia, Andrew, Fred, KLXPete, KLXPetes brother, DRZRoss, RVT, Richard300, DannoJ, WRAlex. Sorry I cant recall everyones name so please add yourself if you were there. Cheers all!
