Definitely want to ride somewhere this weekend. How about the Pouncelines?
Went pit bike riding at Tom's Farm in Wales last weekend (see picture). It was actually more fun than it sounds. Amazing where those little bikes would go.

Sorry Adrian - I know Neil sometimes rides a bit slow, looks a bit awkard, makes a heap of mistakes and screams when approaching dangerous looking objects, he can still kick your arse!!!
The ride in two weeks is only for the learners so go out and find one.

All I can say is - If we didn't set any standards we would be riding with a bunch of dickheads, riding MX bikes in tshirts and shorts, tearing up public areas and not only not looking out for our own safety but also not caring about the safety of others. Take a trip down to Gnangarra on a Saturday afternoon and have a look at accidents just waiting to happen.
For the amount of rides that you guys go on, there are very few accidents with the CQ's. Good bikes, riding in the same direction with proper safety gear on. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to work it out.
We even get pissed if someone gets a flat who hasn't fitted heavy duty tubes - That's a standard that has also been introduced. It is not about petty rules and regulations - its about CQ leading the way in WA off road riding and keeping the authorites of their back. Every time we try to improve club we seem to lose a memmer or two. There are plenty of other Perth based web sites that have a whole lot less rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been looking at the messages wasn't going to say nothing BUT!!!!
I posted the ride on Saturday and yes Buddha was wearing Helmet, Gloves, Goggles, Camel Back (with water), Bum Bag, Riding Shirt, Jeans & Boots (which I gather by past pics was the same gear he has worn in the previous rides).
Which I thought was sufficent for the ride. If he had turned up in sneakers & jeans I would have said some thing to him but seeing as we weren't racing the protection he had seemed sufficent to me.
I wear Helmet, Gloves , Goggles, Camel Back (with water),
Riding Shirt & Pants, Armour & Dirt Bike Boots, I don't wear knee protection (which I am looking at buying)& I don't wear a neck brace (which I would like to wear but don't know if I will)
Where do we stop with protection. We all have different incomes and different priorities.
We are all out there for a ride with a great bunch of blokes.
(my wife says we sound like a mob of bitches)

My 2 cents worth on the safety gear, wear as much and of the best quality you can afford. Having had my fair share of stacks over the years, i am sure i have been saved from several broken knee caps, several broken shoulders, numerous broken toes and elbows etc etc etc, by always wearing my safety gear. I try and cover all the sticking out bits as much as possible, so knee guards, elbow/forearm protection and shoulders. I wear a plastic bib style chest protector, more for the fact its got some really sturdy shoulder protectors, than anything to do with its chest protection. And judging by all the scrapes and dings on my boots, plastic knee cups and shoulder cups, they are doing there jobs.
DavidM, i disagree on the femur thing, having broken both in one accident. I was back after 12 months, whereas i injured my ACL and medial ligament in 2000 and it took until 2005 to finally get it sorted. There are lots of doctors who would have you believe that a clean break in the leg is better than a ligament injury in the knee.

Hey Buddha, that would be me. Just out for a good time with a bunch of guys and don't give a continental *%$# what the next guy wears, as long as he/she is comfortable and understands the risk they impose on themselves for not wearing the correct safety gear.
Hey Daza, where the hell are ya? I think you should give up that new job so that you can come riding again !!

My we are getting very picky over the riders attire. Everybody knows that Knee braces are responsible for more broken femur's. A knee re-construction is quicker to recover from than a femur. ( I hope I never test the theory) The top riders don't even wear chest protectors unless there is rocky roost. And what is wrong with riding in jeans, apart from the monkey butt.
Spend your money on GOOD boots, before anything else!!!!

What ive noticed is the lack of input from the guys who i rode with on saturday. No one had said anything at the time about me wearing jeans nor have they said anything on here about what i wear, seems like some people just care about going out having a good ride with a bunch of guys and others just want to have a bitch because not everyone conforms to what they think should and should not be worn.

Buddha, no he was not wearing a helmet, that was my point, he thought he would not need one as he was only going to be riding at walking pace and he was on a 4 wheeler as well. Its like guys who spend $1200 on a road bike helmet then you see them riding in shorts.

A lot of crashes occur at slower sppeds when guys are in the comfort zone and not consentrating as hard. I am like a lot of riders who tries to ride within my limits(thats why I ride so slow) but get of the gas and down you can come.

The above report/crash happened in first gear in front of Roley and Brad!!!

KTMSteve, i can see your point, but there are a lot of what ifs in life. if i dont feel comfortable riding at a certain speed or area i dont do it, i try and take the risk out of things if i can. Just curious to know, was your mate wearing a helmet?

Buddha.
As Colin said with out the correct boots how bad would have his foot been?
On the Crusty ride down with WCTS I had a crash going up Big Burtha and hurt my left knee, but got up and continued on for the rest of the day. When I removed my riding gear I couldn't believe that I had split my knee guard into two pieces. With out one I would have smashed it completely.
As for good riding boots, I recommend the SIDI Crossfire, great vale for money.
With the riding pants they have built in padding, room for knee guards and wear protection for when you do fall off, definitely worth the money.

Buddha - I haven't been riding for three weeks as I hurt my foot wearing proper boots and that is my point- I am sure I would have had a lot more damage without them on.
Jeans - It is difficult to fit even knee guards under them and although braces are the way to go, guards stop a lot of damage - Although I say jeans are acceptable!!
Kneck braces, body armour - We should all probably wear all of it but my point was not to pick on anyone, upset anyone or stir the pot, it was just to provoke a discussion to see what the average rider thought. I say we need a standard and I "believe" the T & E standard is probably worth adopting.
We have a standard now as far as rego and license goes, if we keep moving forward in a positive direction I don't think it would be a bad thing.
|
 |
Buddha, you may think differently about body armour when you come off at 5km/h and land on a tree branch and it pierces you and damages internal organs. I have a friend who was musstering sheep and came off at walking pace as is now brain damaged.Like hooters said it is far cheaper than reconstuctive surgery. Food for thought.

Hooters im not having a go at you or any of the other guys, you wear what you have to and what you feel comfortable with, i personally dont see or feel the need to wear full body armor and if i did ride a lot more and rode way past my limitations , knee braces and a neck brace would be a priority before anything else.

hey budda, i wear proper knee braces and have done for a while cause i have to- way cheaper than knee recon and 6 or 8 weeks off work. i couldn't ride without em, i started with $300 ones and have up graded to flash astrek ones they are awesome but not cheap. boots, i swear by sidi and have done for years

i shall respond, my boots are road based, to be honest didnt know what type to buy when 1st getting into more off road riding, but ive had lumps of wood fly into my shins and toes doin 100k+ and doing no damage, they also have good sideways support for ankles. i do have to buy new ones anyway so will be getting offroad boots soon. What is the advantage of riding pants, i did notice someone wearing them who had them ripped. How many of you guys wear neck braces, that would have been the only thing that would have saved me a bit of pain, and who wears proper knee braces not just guards. Im all for safe riding, thats why i ride within my limits.
