Trail Report: December 3rd 2000

Players: Brad, JAW, Mark, Tim
Venue: Alkimos and Yanchep
Rider of the Day: Tim - Set a fast pace and sacrificed some fuel to get another player home at the expense of getting home himself.
Stack of the Day: No stacks.
Breakages & Injuries: Not quite a breakage but annoying nonetheless - Mark out of fuel 5km from home, Tim 100m from home

Report:

It's dusty. It's hot. The tracks are loose sand, everything that was once green is now brown. This is what summertime presents for the players; it sets a bunch of new challenges for all.

These 'different' conditions were reflected in the time trials; not even the 2 minute barrier was broken. In winter the track is damp and this makes it fast - you can push hard into corners and know that you've got a good chance of getting traction all the way through. When the track is full of ruts and loose sand you just can't rely on getting that same traction. Vital seconds are lost because all corners must be taken a bit slower and then getting back up to speed out of the corner is slower too.

But its all a relative thing - everybody has to put up with those same conditions - so even though there were no new personal bests it was as fair a race as any.

The old windmill and water tank, part of time trial track scenery.

Dissapointing results, especially for Brad: the switch to a knobby rear tyre over the factory road-trail version and that extra toothed front sprocket didn't shave any time off at all...

Another sign of the hot weather - a bushfire has ravaged the track north of the Alkimos leaving the area looking a veritable wasteland.

A low-key scramble to Yanchep and back was undertaken, Tim leading with a pace that no one was matching save the occasional bit of inspiration by JAW. Leading is good in dusty conditions, following is, well, dusty.

Back to the half pipe the players felt like some air time. Now this is not something you are going to see in a Crusty Demons video, but the Crusty Quinns lads don't exactly stay on the ground *all* the time:

Graceful work by Tim...

A number of attempts and the right

"Just ride over it like it's not there"

Umm, okay Mark - keep practicin' ;)

Heading back for the end of the day saw Mark run out of fuel. Normally the motorcross bike players head back for fuel mid race meet. With the less than inspiration time trials both Tim and Mark decided not to bother refueling.

Droppin' a bit of fuel out of the KX into the RM...

Thirsty buggers those motorcross bikes, only 48kms travelled and Marks RM250 is spent. Tim picks up Rider of the Day not just for setting an unbreakable pace to Yanchep but for sacrificing some of the fuel out of his tank to get the kid a bit further. Mark makes it to within 5km from home, Tims KX250 splutters, coughs and dies with only 100m to go. An easy push for Tim, JAW takes the 4runner for a blatt to rescue Mark.

"I really wanted to do a rebuild before this meet", Mark explains, "But I didn't have the time. The rebuild should get her back up to the 60km round trip I know she's good for."

60km? sheesh. I usually only fill the 'ole XR up every third race meeting - to keep the weight down y'see ;)
