Rider of the Day: Gary - Shatters the long-standing best lap on the time trials.
Stack of the Day: Wolfie - Following too close can be a hazard to your health.

JAW - 4runner drops radiator contents as he is stashing some fuel just before the event

Report:

The next time somebody calls an early morning ride refer them back to the two time early starts were attempted. It can't be a jinx but there was some sense of deja-vu mishaps throughout the day.

JAW gets up early and decides to stash some 2 stroke fuel out near the time trial for the 'crosser riders. Doesn't pack any provisions and on the way home the 4runner drops a heater hose and unloads the radiator contents on the ground. Fixes the problem but no water, no mobile phone. "ah, they'll come looking for me pretty soon".

Nearly two hours later the lads rock up wondering why he wasn't home. "Git me sum water!". Brad gets the trusty crusty quinns Landy support vehicle out for the necessary top up and we are away. Behind schedule and not without a bit of scoffing but away. Kiddies - pack some water in your car and take your mobile phone if you are taking the 4x4 bush - and good on ya Brad ;)

On the upside while waiting for the Landy the lads bump into Gary, another local Quinns lad out ridin' by himself. "Come out with Gary, put in a couple of laps at the time trial!"

Gary does that and picks up Rider of the day for taking down the long-standing time trial best lap with a 1:48. You could say that the 2001 KTM 520 with-all-the-fruit trail weapon was the reason but nup, he joined us for the rest of the day, we saw him ride and he largely puts us to shame. Even still he was interested in joining us again which is cool by us - he gives the Crusty Quinns team some credibility ;)

Wolfie is pretty pleased with himself on a 1:57 and JAW sporting his "new" '87 Ballard-enhanced XR630 is a bit shaky and wobbly but manages a 2:05. Mik is riding JAW's old faithful '84 XR250 and snaps up a 2:12. The 250 is well suited to his smaller frame, there may be a change of hands for that old girl...

Brad is consistent but behind the pace and it had better be a fault with the RM250 - because Mark should be picking up much better times than that. Jak still has his L-plates on and is pleased enough to simply be recording times. The lads notice throughout the day that he isn't falling behind much anymore, we shall now consider him on his P's.

Some Brad airtime.

The lads kick on up to the Alkimos for a play in the sand. Up and down death valley, squirting sharp turns on the banks - the loose sand is hard on the bike and the rider but there is a sense of accomplishment in sand-playing.

The lads attempt the high speed Alkimos dune jump again. Brad shows excellent form and Mik is right up there. Gary is jumping at least twice if not three times as high as us, you can't help but think that he has done this before readers ;)

"Enough of that" the lads call as their bikes are getting hotter and angrier, "lets do the Yanchep run."

Gary takes the lead - he knows a good inland way of getting there. Not more than a few hundred meters from the Alkimos and Mark has broken down. "I think she's overheated, you guys go on without me." Man down. Ends up that the RM's spark is missing. S'all right kid, we'll pick you up later with the 4runner and the trailer - happy cow counting until then ;)

We're weaving down some nice firm tracks and although Jak had earlier put in a good attempt at Stack of the day, and that Brad had "stopped ungracefully" 5 or 6 times, Wolfie wins it. Looked a lot like he was following somebody real close and they'd pulled up giving him the option of ramming them or bailing out. Ouch, that was hard ground too Wolfie - lucky you were wearing your Mr Invicibility suit.

Just as the lads arrive at the water tanks of Yanchep JAW runs out of fuel. There is a sense of irony in that. "She's a thirsty girl" he says as he switches to reserve and plans a much more sedate 20kms home.

After an incident free ride home Gary exchanges details so we can get him in for future Crusty Quinns adventures. Gary is prepping his bike for some natural terrain racing held down Harvey way. However if you are going to be riding around the back of Quinns it is much better to be doing it even with a bunch of amatuers than riding by yourself.
