Trail Report: September 15th 2002

Players: Brad, JAW, Mik, Phil, Rob, Wolfie.
Venue: Alkimos and Yanchep (for some)
Rider of the Day: Rob - Selflessly gives up his can of drink for the casualty...
Stack of the Day: Phil - New back in the saddle, maybe going too hard, comes off and knocks his head hard.
Breakages & Injuries: Phil - Concusion and an ambulance trip to hospital

Report:

Mik is pretty happy about getting his shocky fixed. "The guy reckoned it was one of the worst he'd seen, reckoned it had little oil left and what it did had looked like the black scum from the bottom of a diesel engine sump." Well good job you finally sorted it ;)

Phil comes off the track...

Enough players have gathered by 3:00pm to call it an official meet. Brad has brought along mate Phil who's just taken possession of a widow-making, trail-weapon KTM 380 two smoker. Phil hasn't ridden much in a while, the players can see from his style "he's got what it takes" albeit pretty rusty.

About 5 kms out he's gone round a bend, come off and over the handle bars. He's a bit shaken up but dusts himself off, has a rest, and gets back on with the show.

A quick blast up to Alkimos, and then some further touring towards Yanchep.

However down in the grassy gully just in from Wolfies agility course the lads start to realise Phil must have hit his head pretty hard, and that he must be concussed. "Did I fall off my bike?" "Where are we?" Hmm. That's bad.

...the players start to realise Phil is in a bad way.

After half an hour of "observation" Brad, Rob and Wolfie decide that Phil should be organised a lift home. Mik is still keen to test the rebuilt shock and JAW is still chaffin' at the bit for some fast riding. The group parts ways, JAW and Mik to Yanchep, others getting Phil home.

Only JAW and Mik make the tanks.

Mik and JAW have a good run, make it to the tanks for the usual rest and reflection. Mik's brought a bag of rasberries which is always a good call - you need to keep the sugars up ;)

The coastal route back to Alkimos is chosen, it is not often taken as camel and horse riders are regulary seen on it. The players as a whole try to give those 1 horsepower and 1 camelpower machines plenty of room but it's late in the day which means pretty much all our non-motorised offroaders have headed home.

Back at the Alkimos Mik discovers the dune jump once again has a pretty good lip. The torrential rain the day before and all morning has also given the sand plenty of grip. Mik and JAW take turns in trying to get some good jump shots; but with the sun rapidly fading the photos do not do any justice to the fun being had with a bit of airtime ;)

picture Mik launches and takes some sand with him.
picture JAW prefers some speed for a simple "glide over".

Suddenly Rob appears out of nowhere. "What are you doing here Rob?"

"Well I dinkied Phil back to the pit which was as far as we could get. Brad then raced home, got the 4x4 and dropped him off at his house. He got pretty bad, he started saying things like 'who are you?' and 'what day is it?' and 'I have a bike?'. The ambulance came and picked him up; Brad is on his way out with a trailer to collect the bike. Wolfie is still out there with it."

picture
Mik and JAW are just about to head home when...

JAW, Mik and Rob head back to the scene...

Wolfie is pretty cold from sitting around waiting for the rescue team. "Guys, I've gotta go." "No worries Wolfie, see you on the messageboard ;)"

As the sun is slowly setting JAW alerts Mik and Rob to the fact that his front headlight had blown. Rob grabs his mobile phone, rides up to the nearest hill and gives Brad a call.

"I've only just got off Marmion Ave."

Hmm.

The lads stash the bike in the bush and head out, Rob up in front escorting headlightless JAW with Mik pulling up the rear. Halfway back they catch up with Brad driving out. "Just past Mik's hill, about 20 metres to the right." "No worries."

With a bit of XR stunt-team riding Mik stays next to JAW down the tracks so they can share Mik's headlight, Rob leads the way with his brigther headlight. A slow ride; Rob up front taking it easy, JAW "using the force" to navigate and Mik trying to keep close enough and yet far enough back in case of collision; eventually all are back home.

...hoping that Phil is okay. Moral of the story, as always, motorbikes are dangerous so be careful! Wear your safety gear and ride within your own limits. Some "rational fear" is a good thing. Play hard but for goodness sake play carefully.

picture
"Selfless Rob" picks up ROTD.

Oh, no prizes for guessing that Stack of the Day went to Phil, with an honoury Rider of the Day going to Rob. When Phil was looking pretty hazy Rob without a thought gives up his one can of soft drink, which as it turns out Phil can't drink anyhow and ends up pretty much tipped out on the ground.

Hey, Rider of the Day is not just about the riding...
