Report by Colin

An Anzac day ride was called for a scenic tour around Pickering Brook. The group met at Macca’s as usual, had a quick feed and headed off for the hills. They were met there by John, a mate of Roley’s and four of his mates. The new guys showed us around and lead us on a large loop, up to a look out at Mt Dale and over a hill that claimed at least half the field on the down hill descent. As I was sliding down with both wheels locked up I managed to pass a bike of every colour lying on its side. It was steep enough that no one wanted to give it a go in reverse direction. Bleeder broke a brake lever but most just hurt their pride a little. Several guys actually walked the bikes down the steepest parts.

There was a good amount of ribbing that went on. The Baboons got stuck into the English folk but got as much back in more ways than one. KX Steve was hoping for a CQ initiation today however there were too many other riders around that we couldn’t share that secret with.

The Crustys headed of for a quick first loop while the new guys helped out fixing a flat they had just picked up. On the way home, a nail through the rear tyre resulted in a flat for Col. Cliff got out a can of that stuff ( white runny stuff) that is supposed to fix flats but it wasn’t until the group got back to the car, removed the wheel and tube to find out the tube was shredded. A borrowed tube from one of the lads and the 15 riders took off for the big loop.

Mainly gravel roads, lots of dust and trip up to Mt Dale. The view is awsom but did I mention dust! The first 50 odd k’s were pretty easy except the down hill crawl. A BBQ lunch and the Crustys were off again solo for some fire trails, cross country action and a couple of loops with a nice fast hill climb where they could really give it a squirt.

A short rest at Mt Dale – I think Graham said it was about 450 m’s above sea level.

The boys have a rest at the bottom of the hill descent and share some stories about how "they" got down the hill.

Part of the hill descent. Funny how a photo never shows how steep it is.

Who is this evil looking warrior?

Is this Barney from the Flintstones?

Did you just burn your hand on my exhaust Cliff? Me too. Feels great doesn’t it.

The group awarded Col rider of the day for leading a “Crusty” loop after lunch. Everyone got home in one peace with only minor mechanical problems. With Howard the engineer there, even a full top end rebuild on the side of the track wouldn’t have been a problem. I tell you guys, it’s better than staying home mowing the lawn!!!
