Tech Tip Template.

Posted by JAW

Now I've actually had requests on how to write a tech tip page for Crusty Quinns Readers. This html file not only will give you a good starting template, but it might also give you a bit more understanding of HTML :)

The first thing to do is download a copy of this HTML file. Do that by right mouse clicking here and pressing "Save Target As..." and save the HTML file somewhere on your hard disk. Also grab a copy of the style sheet - again right mouse click and press "Save Target As..." Put that file in the same directory, it tells the browser how the page should look.

Ah, all good anvils are RFVC powered :)

Now What?

Open up the HTML file using a text editor. Windows notepad, suprisingly, will do you just fine. Run notepad and from the "file" menu select "open" specify "file type - all files" and open your HTML file...

I've filled the file full of comments to guide you through the process, my style is pretty simple and just consists of pictures in tables next to text. Have a look at it, you'll get the gist.

How do I get the pictures?

It sure helps if you have a digital camera or a scanner. If you don't find someone who does. Use a program such as ACDSee, Paintshop Pro or even Windows Photo Editor (comes with Microsoft Office) and edit your original picture. Aim to "crop" the picture just to show the part you want, "resize" it to somewhere between 200-500 wide (any height), so that it is big enough to show the detail you are after.

Then simply write text next to it! I use the pictures as my inspiration on what to write, why you will usually notice the text next to the picture is about the picture. Well, if you've read any of my work you will probably have guessed that anyway :)

So do what Wolfie would do, get on the back wheel and get roaring!

Save your files as type jpg in the same directory. When you are done test your file. Back in windows explorer double click on it. That will open your browser and there's your page.

My normal trick is to have the editor open and the browser open, look at it, make a change in the editor, save it, then press refresh in the browser and see the change.

When it is done, email me the HTML and all the jpgs, I will post it! Feel free to email me if you are getting confused, Crusty Quinns always needs some more tech tips. Good One!
