Where Lano Cervantes

Having had a rather abridged attempt at the last Lano run, Col McC called a standard fare Crustys ride and we attracted 4 takers. Col had some "mans" business to take care of first and this meant a later than normal start and this also meant the Lano car-park was jammed with wannabe freestylers by time we arrived.

We welcomed Rococop on his DRZ400 for his first ride and off we went, with Col McC leading and Tiger sweeping. The run to Wedge was brisk and uneventful, as with a small group there was little dust and no hanging about. After a quick stop at the nurse's hut, we went down on the beach to be greeted by the tide being quite well up. This meant the run along the sand was a bit softer and bumpier than usual. A large hidden mound of soft, damp sand just appeared in front of us and whilst Col on the 450 was able to blast through, Daza's new KTM 250 came to a bit of an abrupt halt and sent him over the bars, for what turned out to be stack of the day.

The section on to Cervantes was maybe a bit steadier than normal, as we had a close call with a large roo early in the section that darted right in between Col McC and Daza. After a lunch break and refuel at the Cervantes servo, we decided to check out the beach for the return leg, hoping it would be out far enough. It only required one detour round a headland and we were fine. It did get very narrow at one point just near the end, before we normally turn back off the beach, as the ocean was right up to the bed of seaweed and this left a very narrow track to follow at the bottom of the dunes. There was some really soft bumpy sand there and one or two washouts that gave heart stopping moments, as you had to drop off the tack by @1m into what looked like really soft damp sand. Roco decided enough was enough and had a bit of a lie down in front of Tiger, who then nearly came off in sympathy and the pair of them had to work hard to get going again.

The late start made the run back more eventful, as the roos were starting to make their appearance and we must have had nearly a dozen appear at one point or other. At least there were very few 4x4's out, apart from one guy who got his Patrol stuck in the same mound Daza came off in. As usual the run back from Wedge got the heart racing and all the players really enjoyed the small group and lack of dust. Daza certainly enjoyed his new bike, only commenting than it needed some more grunt in the sand. And Tiger and Roco both rode well the whole day, considering neither has had too much mileage recently.

Stack of the day Daza
Ride of the day Col McC (for no other reason than he was a top roo magnet)
