Mullewa Pony Express
The Geraldton Enduro club has been hard at work this year promoting Pony Express rides. These events are very laid back and offer a chance to be as competitive as you like or cruise around and have a cuppa and a sandwich at the end of each lap. The boys up front know where they are placed but for the rest of us it is simply the opportunity to have a ride in new territory.
Sight lap kicked off around 9.20 with official start at 10.00 Unfortunately for half the field the clock struck 10.00 before we returned so we simply started to ride. Midwest enduros seem to have a few ingredients in common. Some really really fast sections, plenty of gravel, some decent goat trails and then the dreaded river beds. It is not just enough to be dropped into some boggy sand that I am sure originated from the Finke dessert race but there is also the nice cap rock which is often hidden below the surface. Thank God for steering dampers!!! I learnt way back that a good day is one where you get to go home and not the hospital. The sight lap is just that. Conserve energy, keep light on the throttle and actually take some notice of the traps out there. Plenty of the younger guys are back at the cars first but they are completely stuffed and complaining how hard it is. Four laps later and most of the Crusty's are done. No damage and full of praise for the organizers.
